Many of our patients seek out Holistic Dentistry specifically to have their mercury fillings removed and replaced with modern, safe, effective alternatives. We are proud to be one of the only dentists in New England certified by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology for the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART). Protecting our patients, our staff, and the environment is critically important.

What is dental metal?

Dental metal, known as amalgam, has been a standard practice first appearing in western dentistry in 1528. Unfortunately, Amalgam, consisting of a mix of mercury is still in use to this day. We do not consider it a safe or necessary option. Many people are choosing to have metal removed from their mouth and replaced with other materials because of the uncertainty about safety and their desire for a healthy body and natural smile.

What are non-metal dental materials?
Non-metal dental fillings are available in several materials: ceramic, porcelain, and resin composite.

These are each a healthier mix of materials including plastics, ceramics, glass or porcelain. These fillings are similar in tone and texture to natural teeth. White fillings are now the preferred choice for those wanting strength, natural appearance, and good oral and overall health.

Testimonial

"I am delighted with the dental care provided by Dr. Jacqueline Lucero. I think many of us find just the thought of an encounter with the dentist at least somewhat anxiety provoking; however, Dr. Lucero not only a talented Dentist but also an excellent communicator, has the ability to allay all fears. As a healthcare provider myself, I had become increasingly uncomfortable with having mercury-containing amalgam dental fillings in my mouth. While I certainly had concerns about the safety of having a mercury compound in my body, I also found the fillings unattractive. They were more than 30 years old and had shrunken and darkened over the years. Finally, I made the decision to have all of them replaced and I could not be happier with the outcome, both cosmetically and from a peace-of-mind perspective. The removal process was only minimally uncomfortable, and the results were well worth it. Now, every morning when I look into my mouth, I see natural-appearing teeth. The teeth with the new composite fillings are indistinguishable from the rest of my teeth.

During the course of my dental evaluation and treatment, deep cleaning was recommended, however, I had a previous negative experience with an attempt a deep cleaning by another dentist, and I was initially reluctant to have it done. Dr. Lucero took time to explain to me the indications for deep cleaning and restoring and preserving periodontal health, and she reassured me that, when properly done, it would not be a traumatic experience. I decided to follow her recommendation, and again I was not disappointed. I opted to forgo local anesthesia and even without it, the procedure was not painful. When I returned for my follow up evaluation, my gums were healthy. I found Dr. Lucero to be a knowledgeable, skilled professional with an excellent ability to communicate with patient in a manner that is reassuring and relaxing. My only regret is that she has left Los Angeles to return to her home in Boston to practice. What a loss for LA!"
